Altered Thrift Shop Tray

August 1, 2014

I just want to post that my "shop with me" button is having some issues.  I hope to have the problem resolved quickly, but until then, If you would like to go to my Close To My Heart website, click here. www.tinsheddesigns.ctmh.com

Thanks so much!!!

These are a few of my favorite things!

I've got a HUGE collection of various metal trays, cookie cutters, molds, and stuff I have NO idea what they were used for, LOL!  This picture is a small fraction of my collection.   Anyway, I've been wanting to make a display using some of these, so I decided the launch of my new Blog was a perfect excuse to finally do something.  I will be posting several projects this week, and then I'll wrap it all up showing how I plan to display them all together.

I will list item numbers for the Close To My Heart products at the end of this post.

Here we go!

I also have a large collection of vintage photos of people I don't know.  I like to think of them as my "chosen ancestors".  I love this picture of the lovely woman and her horse.

Here's how it all started:

I paid $1.50 for this cute little tray at a local thrift shop. While I think it's pretty on it's own, I must have 10 of these little trays, and honestly, even I don't need to hoard 10 little trays, lol!

My local Ace hardware store had a bunch of these little Paint Pods on sale for a buck.  It's a real pretty, pale pink color, but I wanted some depth to the color, so after painting the original color on to the tray, I added several drops of Close To My Heart's Cotton Candy re-inker to deepen the color just a shade or so.  Did you know you can use re-inkers to tint paint?

I purposely painted a thick, somewhat uneven coat of paint all over the tray and let it cure over night.  The next day, I took CTMH's Sanding Kit and roughed up the raised edges (and some of the smooth parts too).  I forgot to take pictures of that, sorry.  You can see the results in the completed project.

To mat the photo, I used the new Yuletide Carol paper from Close To My Heart, to make the largest photo mat.  I used the background stamp set called "In the Background" and the new Pixie ink to create the pink striped paper.  I used VersaMark ink along the edges of the mats as well as the photo (it's a color copy), and then added the new Silver Embossing Powder.  I'm so happy CTMH brought back embossing powder!!!  I also used the new Gold and Silver Sequins and Brown and Tan Sparkles.

To finish it off, I used a couple charms from CTMH's Base and Bling and a small amount of ribbon to attach the charms to one of the little cut out sections of the tray.

And that's it!  Hope you like it.  I had a blast making it.  Here's one more look:
